Phlebotomist/Lab Assistant - Laboratory
POSITION SUMMARY: The Phlebotomist/Lab Assistant is responsible for efficiently and accurately collecting blood and other samples from patients. Duties include preparing the testing room with proper tools, walking patients through the process when inserting needles and retrieving samples, and labeling samples for further analysis in the lab. This role will also perform tasks of a clerical nature to assist the lab with day-to-day operations.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES: Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following –
1. Obtains blood specimens and collects nonblood specimens such as urine, sputum, and throat swabs for laboratory testing. Verifies patient information and labels samples properly.
2. Explains blood draw and other procedures to patients and answers any questions.
3. Gathers medical testing materials, including needles, sample vials, blood storage bags and test tubes.
4. Answers telephones throughout the department, and transfers as appropriate.
5. Assists Lab with distributing reports.
6. Monitors and maintains supply inventories following established protocols.
7. Follows all health and safety protocols and procedures to maintain sanitary work areas by wiping counters, centrifuges and phones with disinfectant in order to remain in compliance with regulatory agencies.
8. Participates with coworkers, evaluating workflow and prioritizing responsibilities to provide effective patient care.
9. Participates in rotation of hours/duties and overtime as required. Participated in continuing education when offered.
10. Assists with orientation of new employees, providing them with consistent information.
11. Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of patient privacy rights. Maintains confidentiality of all medical, financial or other sensitive materials and information in printed, electronic or verbal form which may jeopardize the privacy of patients/employees. Accesses and uses the minimum necessary patient identifiably information to perform job responsibilities and duties, and only for authorized purposes.
12. Must be able to meet physical demands and working conditions, outlined below.
13. Regular and reliable attendance.
14. Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS: Phlebotomy certification highly preferred, or completion of on-the-job training provided by Lab Manager or Staff. CPR certification preferred. Good communication skills.
